At Essential Dental, routine dental cleans are an essential part of maintaining a healthy smile. In line with the Australian Dental Association, we recommend a check and clean every six months.
Here’s what to expect during your visit:
Examination
Your dentist will begin with a check of your teeth and gums using a small mirror to look for signs of plaque buildup, gum inflammation, or other concerns. If anything needs attention, the dentist may use our intra-oral cameras for a closer look. The dentist can then use these images to discuss any areas of concern. X-rays may be taken during the appointment to detect any problems that are below the gum surface.
Plaque and Tartar Removal
Using professional tools, your dentist will gently remove plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth and around the gumline. This step targets buildup that can’t easily be removed by brushing or flossing at home and helps prevent cavities and gum disease.
Polishing and Fluoride Treatment
Once the teeth are clean, they will be polished using a special paste to remove surface stains and smooth enamel. This not only feels great on the teeth, but also gives a brighter appearance to your smile. A fluoride treatment is then applied to help protect your teeth and strengthen enamel, reducing the risk of decay between visits.
Comfort and Care During Your Treatment
If you have sensitive teeth or any concerns, let your dentist know so that they can tailor their approach to keep you comfortable throughout the appointment. At the end of your appointment, you’ll be provided with a tailored home care routine and one of our follow-up care packs.
Following your appointment, it is normal to temporarily experience some very mild sensitivity after plaque and tartar removal. Maintaining good oral hygiene at home is the best way to extend the benefits of professional teeth cleaning.
At Essential Dental we accept all health funds and also offer a special partnership program with HCF and CBHS for preventative dental care. This means we offer HCF and CBHS members ‘no gap’ checkups, cleans and x-rays twice a year depending on your level of cover.
